Story

Thank you for taking the time to look at my fundraising page

About my years teaching in Uganda;

As of 5th September (date of outward flight) I can be found in the village of Ndolwa in the central region of Kamuli, Uganda until 15th August 2009. Ndolwa is found 180miles to the north-east of the capital Kampala- just south of Lake Kyoga and immediately to the west of the Nile River.

My job will be to teach English, maths, science, Social Studies (a grouped subject consisting of History, Geography and R.E) and P.E to the students of Ndolwa Primary School. I have been told that this particular region is the poorest in Uganda and this is reflected in the school as they possess virtually no classroom equipment apart from blackboards and chalk. The school itself consists of bare classrooms with no doors or glass in windows. At some points it will be necessary for me to teach outside, possibly with no equipment at all.

The students I will be teaching will range from the equivalent of Years 3-6 with class sizes also varying from 90 in the younger years (gulp!) to a measly 35 in the oldest year. The students will also vary in age as many of the children will have been unable to attend school consistently, if at all, because of lack of money or simply being orphans due to AIDS. It is possible that in some classes over 50% of my students will be orphans. Despite all these negative effects on their lives current volunteers in Ndowla report that they are all incredibly friendly and eager to learn so I cannot wait to actually be teaching them.

I really do feel that what I will be doing in Uganda is something worthwhile; not just for my own personal development but for the children I will be teaching as well. Ndolwa Primary School suffers from a lack of assistance from the government and as a result is one of the lowest performing in the country. One thing I have been told many times is that we will be surprised at just how basic a level of teaching we will be doing and for this reason alone I feel that my presence there will be justified. Seeing some video footage of the current volunteers in Ndolwa has given me even more drive to meet my fundraising target and return after a year having achieved something I’ve always wanted to do.
