METUPUK is the only patient advocacy group in the UK focused on metastatic breast cancer (MBC). We raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of MBC to patients and healthcare professionals. We campaign for better access to drugs, radiotherapy, surgery and trials, and for improved data collection.

Story

Running the London Marathon has always been on my bucket list and this year I finally got in.

I am raising money for METUPUK, the UK's only Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) patient advocacy group. They are working to improve outcomes for those living with MBC. They won’t stop until it is downgraded from an incurable disease with an average prognosis of 3-5 years to a chronic illness that can be lived with for 20+ years.

31 women die everyday from metastatic breast cancer and it is the biggest killer of women under the age of 50.

Three years ago I got the devastating news that my sister (& best friend) had been given the diagnosis of stage 4 breast cancer. Life suddenly took on a new meaning and the statistics were not in her favour. This was crippling for me but nothing compared to what Claire went through (& continues to go through).

Throw in a COVID pandemic where cancer patients were treated horrendously - the last three years have been a scary place.

After treatments, scans, appointments, and ultimately trusting her instincts to make difficult decisions, we got some amazing news that Claire was likely misdiagnosed as stage 4 and was given the news of a clear scan. She currently has no signs of active cancer, and a chance to plan a future. She has been braver than I could have possibly imagined and was put best by my dad on her wedding day when he said 'you're my hero!'

Through all the turbulent times, social media gave her an outlet to find people in the same situation and was able to reach out for support. METUPUK was a charity which helped her and continues to help other women during such a horrendously difficult time in their lives.

Please give whatever you can to help. X
