Story
I sit on the Board of Trustees of Diversity Role Models, a fantastic charity seeking to embed inclusion and empathy in the next generation. They do this by creating safe spaces where young people can explore difference and consider their role in creating a world where we all feel accepted through student workshops featuring LGBT+ or ally role models who speak openly about their lived experiences.
During my interview for the role of Treasurer I was asked why I wanted to become involved with DRM. I started to explain to the panel that I had been bullied during my years at secondary school for being gay and felt I didn’t have anyone to talk to about it. I left school in 1994, and despite the passage of nearly 3 decades I still found talking about my school experiences profoundly emotional and upsetting. The fact that those emotions remain so strong after so long is the clearest indicator to me of the importance of embedding inclusion and empathy in everyone. That is why I am running the London Marathon to raise funds for such a great cause.
