I have been asked to participate in a sponsored trek with a very close friend Daniel Kinsella to help raise monies for a charity very close to his and his family’s heart. I also know of good friends who have needed and some still do utilise the amazing facilities that Alder Hey and all associated provide to children and families in need of special support
and care. Daniel's daughter, Maisie, now 14 years old - had at the
age of 3 been diagnosed with Artial Septal Defect resulting in having open heart surgery. Alder Hey did everything that they could do to have Maisie’s condition be fully cured - and throughout the treatment had to place her on a heart bypass machine to make sure that she had the best chance of getting through this terrible condition. Daniel and his wife Jill had their world turned upside down - but with the professionalism, devotion, focus, dedication and care that Alder Hey provided - she has now grown into a beautiful, caring and bright young woman who with her own drive and self-belief has raised fantastic monies by organising an event on her own that myself and her family helped push her to climb/ trek 20000 feet last year - something that had her specially recognised and thanked for by Alder Hey.
I have also recently lost my brother to cancer so have witnessed first-hand the amazing work and commitment that these hospital workers do. They are wonderful, caring and so understanding – having to deal with traumatic situations with so much calmness. These places are so
critical to all of us – we need them – and all of the hospices and aftercare services too – and therefore support them as much as we can.
Needless to say that many of you will know of my love for the great outdoors and my passion for getting into the mountains at any chance. I have climbed over 120 mountains of the UK - constantly introducing and giving guidance to friends is always my want. I love to wild camp, get away with a gang and also on my own to the mountains. I have
visited Austria, Italy and more recently Chamonix to enjoy the amazing beauty - and get my fix.
This will be one very big challenge for me. I'll need to get some serious training done - losing towards 2 stone (15kg) whilst at it - and commit a lot of time and focus to get me to my target.
Please be generous - think of how special Alder Hey is.
