About the Wildlife Ranger Challenge: 

COVID-19 has brought tourism revenue to a halt across Africa, threatening the important work and livelihoods of the rangers who protect iconic African wildlife such as elephants, pangolins, rhinos, lions, and more. Ranger teams are now uniting around the Wildlife Ranger Challenge, a running race with one goal: to raise money to support thousands of their fellow rangers. Now is the time to go the extra mile—it’s time to race to support our rangers. Every dollar donated will be matched by the Scheinberg Relief Fund, doubling your generous contribution.

Your donation will help 67 rangers and an estimated 342 livelihoods in and around Chuilexi Conservancy in Mozambique.

The role of rangers:

Rangers play a vital role in patrolling and monitoring the Chuilexi Conservancy area. Based throughout the conservancy, they patrol from eight fixed outposts. Rangers are deployed on foot, by vehicle, and by boat during the wet season. Rangers deal with threats such as elephant and bushmeat poaching, snaring,  illegal logging and mining. During the crop season, they assist with keeping buffalo and elephants out of fields in the local communities.

Effects of the pandemic:

 Anti-poaching operations continue on a daily basis. All necessary precautions have been put in place to protect rangers from getting infected while performing their duties. 

Logistics have become increasingly difficult and time-consuming. Replacement of equipment has become near impossible with most equipment being outsourced. One senior ranger has not been able to return due to travel restrictions.
