Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. I am a human rights volunteer and working on child rights in Ghana. It is every Childs fundamental human right to have access to and receive an education however, half a million children in Ghana do not go to school, with 60,000 of them growing up on the street.

For these street children daily life consists of a constant struggle for survival. They search polluted garbage dumps for metal parts, which they can sell for a few coins. They sleep without any protection sometimes right next to traffic-laden streets and often alone. They often do not know when they will next eat, or what they will have to eat.

Violence, drugs and sexual abuse are part of these children’s daily routine. A lack of hygiene often leads to infection with diseases and makes it harder to cure them. Without a chance to complete or even attend school, the perspective for these young people looks very grim.

Whilst Ghana has many schools, they are expensive and inaccessible to those living in the slums of Ghana. One of the solutions to putting children in school is having a free school in the poorer areas to eliminate travel expenses. The Ghana goverment claims to have a free education system, this is far from the truth. Children are going without education and working from a young age because their parents cannot afford to pay as little as $25 per year to send their child to school.

I have been conducting outreach in Jamestown one of the poorest slum communities in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Through my outreach I have spoken to copious amounts of street children, all of which dream to be in school but instead they are working on the streets.

Christ the King of Kings Preparatory School is a primary school in Jamestown that I have been working with to help provide resources and put street children into school. The school is severely under resourced and receives no funding, rather it relies on the three cedes (90 cents AUD) per day students are required to pay to cover the costs of their lunch. Most children at the school will only receive one meal per day and will often only come a couple of times a week due to the cost. The average Ghanaian earns 3.8 cedes per day ($1.15 AUD), those in the slums often have no source of income.

My aim is to raise enough funds to pay for the schooling of children at this school so they can have access to free education. I also endeavour to use the funds to pay for street children to go to school in the local area so they can have the right to education that every child deserves and is entitled to. Money raised will also go towards books, stationary, food, better hygiene facilties, and uniforms for the children.

Please help me give these children the childhood they so desperately deserve!
