Claire & Lucy's Hadrian's Wall Trekathon 2014 page

Hadrian's Wall Trekathon 2014 · 16 August 2014 ·
Where do we start... This was a challenge a close friend of ours Mandy had planned to do in memory of
her late husband who died of Leukemia at the age of 36, only to have her own life
cut short by Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome on Jan 5th this year, age 29. So we are embarking on completing the trek for her, asking for your support as we trek our socks off for a Marathon 26 miles ...in positive thoughts, and from your pockets, to help us raise funds for a great cause along our way
Claire's Story
Mandy entered my life in as much of a whirlwind as she left it. We met over 2 years ago when she was fundraising for Leukemia research by completing her first sky dive and soon became close friends - sharing bottles of wine, dancing, laughing and creating some fabulous memories. She was attacking life by filling it with fun & challenges - both physically but personally as well. She was one of the bravest, most talented people i know and it seems so unfair that she isn't here to see this trek and the rest of her life through.
sooo... the trek! hmmm this is the craziest thing i have ever done - i'm no where near fit enough and would never have thought of doing anything like this - but Mandy meant so much to me, it feels the right thing to do.. for her. It might sound like a cliche but its not really about the money for me, but it would be lovely to raise some to help support a fabulous charity that was close to Mandy's heart.
We miss you Mandy, every day - you will keep me going!

Lucy's Story
The night before Mandy passed away, we spent the evening drinking Pinot noir in the corner of our favourite local pub. We talked about life, the universe and everything. As her friends and family well know, Mandy had a running bucket list. She shared her three top items she wanted to accomplish this year:
1) Do the full Three Peak Challenge
2) Party in Vegas for her 30th Birthday
3) Trek a Marathon across Hadrian's Wall
Being the physical challenge shy sort of person that I am, I agreed straight away to back her, on number 2, obviously! Although she quickly had me agreeing to do number 3 as well (darn her sales persuasion techniques and the actress within her!). Of course it helped that this would be a weekend of girly fun and all in the name of a great charity, Macmillan, close to her heart following the loss of her husband Phil from Leukaemia in 2011.
Nothing could have prepared me for what happened the following day. Mandy's sudden passing (SADS) sent huge shock waves through the hearts of her lovely family and friends all around the world.
I feel so proud of Mandy, the challenges she faced and those she set herself. Her bravery, strength and drive has been an inspiration to so many. I feel this is my chance to do my bit, honour her memory and complete my own challenge - a bucket list item Claire & I can tick off for her.
Mandy - I miss your big America smile, your laughter and good times we shared, our 'mash up' suppers made out of leftovers from our fridges (with added pomegranate). You popping round for endless cups of tea (and wine), your stories, your wise words and life advice, living with you in the Mill, going out for wine and dancing and hearing your singing next door.
In the words of Winnie the Pooh:
"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard"
