We’re Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), and we’re a suicide prevention charity. We host a helpline for people affected by suicide, as well as vital online resources for anyone who needs them.

Story

I am running the Vitality British 10k London Run for Campaign Against Living Miserably with the purpose of promoting awareness on mental health issues involving young men and to raise funds to support this charity.

I recently lost my best friend, Olly, to mental illness.

Olly was a go-getter in life. He was intelligent and nailed a first in his degree.  He was funny and the most loving and caring person I knew. People loved him and this was demonstrated in the number of friends he had who wanted to spend time with him. He would, without fail, help and support his friends, as well as strangers.  He touched many lives and he brought happiness to so many people.

However, whilst he was being awesome, charming (of course), good looking (okay Olly I admit it!),  working hard, partying, and creating fun memories that we will all treasure, he was battling his struggle with depression. Unfortunately this fight became too much for him and led to him taking his own life.

Mental illness kills, lets raise awareness and help prevent suicides.

There are people everywhere in our lives who are suffering, whether we know it or not, and I want people to be more aware so that they know they are not alone in this. Help is available for them. They can keep creating fun memories and achieving in their lives. With the help of charities like CALM, these people can have the support they need and live the life they deserve.

CALM, the campaign against living miserably, exists to prevent suicide - the biggest killer of men aged between 20 and 49. With medical intervention, it's thought that most, if not all cases of mental illness are curable or at the least manageable. The shocking fact is that despite mental health issues contributing to a quarter of health problems in the UK it only receives 13% of the NHS budget.
