October Dog Walking Challenge 2023 · 1 October 2023 to 31 October 2023 ·

Take on our 100km October Dog Walking Challenge, supported by tails.com. Every step you take with your faithful friend, will help us grow the number of specialist dementia nurses so more families can receive their life-changing support.

Story

I'm taking part in the October Dog Walking Challenge to support families facing dementia. My aunt Eleanor lives with us and she has dementia. My dad also suffered from dementia and it is heartbreaking to see the deterioration in people who have this illness.

Sometimes it is difficult to understand how simple tasks can be such a struggle and frustrating when you are trying to get them washed or dressed and they can’t remember how to put a jumper on . They are either hyper focused or easily distracted and no matter how many times you tell them something, it makes no difference which can make life a struggle.

Then there are good days when they are on top form and those are the days you try and hold on to but they becomes less frequent as the disease takes hold.

Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing care to families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimers disease. They help people with dementia stay independent for longer, and support the people caring for them so they have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days. They have the time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems, helping families take back control when they are struggling.

If you can donate I would greatly appreciate it but if not, please share this as a way of raising awareness for this terrible disease.
