Story

Hello my name is Claire mulligan I am a mental health nurse at Oakwood day treatment service in Nuneaton.  At the end of 2014 I will be going to Kaduna which is in Nigeria Africa to work within an orphanage for two weeks. The orphanage is called mercy home and is in a remote part of Nigeria situated in the south of Kaduna. The orphanage has the capacity to house 78 children and has delivered over 2000 babies; it consists of a day nursery, primary and secondary school.

Mercy Home Orphanage was opened on the 24th of November 2001 and became fully operational April 2004. The goals and objectives of Mercy Home are as follows:

  • provide a home for orphans and abandoned babies
  • counsel and offer free delivery ante natal and post natal services for young girls and unwed mothers
  • empower young girls and unwed mothers with skill acquisition such as sewing, knitting, computer literacy and the like
  • provide inexpensive and free medical services for the communities
  • providing education to Orphans

Life expectancies are low, orphans are many, and medicines and medical care are often scarce with many children facing a bleak future. I am aiming to raise £2000 for the orphanage and whilst there buy them equipment that they need and resources to help support them. We will be carrying out fundraising events throughout the year to support this. Thank you so much for your kind donation.
