12 hour isolation (no tv, music, books, phone, communication) to feel what it is like for elderly people that are neglected and lonely. · 16 June 2012

We are Hourglass - formerly Action on Elder Abuse - the voice for older people at risk. We provide a Helpline and programmes to deliver direct support to victims and survivors of abuse. We campaign to stop harm of older people and to create an environment where safer ageing is guaranteed for all.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

I AM RAISING AWARENESS OF THE ABUSE AND NEGLECT OF THE ELDERLY!

To all my friends and family,

I am sure most of you will know how vulnerable elderly people can be and will have seen tv programs or read stories in the newspaper about the abuse that can happen either in care homes or in their own homes.

Last month I watched a panorama episode in which a lady was left in her room at a care home alone all day apart from when carers came in to feed her. When they did come in they did not say hello or talk to her they only spoke to each other. Unable to move unaided or communicate easily, this lady was unable to turn on her tv - so was left for hours on end in a room with no tv, no music, no company, not able to read books and not able to call for help! I was appalled that someone could be treated so badly, with no respect or compassion or thought for her feelings. Unfortunately her treatment got much worse and another carer hit her around the head for no reason.

I currently work as an activity co-ordinator in a care home in Cradley Heath and thankfully have never witnessed anything like this but there are places where it happens on a regular basis.

The charity Action for Elder Abuse does a fantastic job raising awareness and running a confidential helpline for those suffering abuse so I am embarking on a challenge to help raise funds for this wonderful charity.

I will be spending 12 hours in a room at Trinity House Care Home with no contact from anybody else for the whole time. Just like the lady from the panorama program, I will have no TV, radio, phone, internet access, books, pens or paper. I will not be able to ask for help from anyone and my meals will be left in my room by a carer that will not be able to make contact with me. The aim is for me to understand some of the boredom, isolation and loneliness that many elderly people feel on a day to day basis at the same time as raising some much needed funds for charity.

It would be wonderful if you could sponsor me as I take on this challenge. Any amount will be greatly appreciated.
