I have decided to run the Colchester Half Marathon this year to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, a charity very close to my heart.  

My Mum, the most inspirational and positive person I know, was first diagnosed with breast cancer thirty-four years ago. Following successful treatment she remained cancer free for over twenty years but in 2003 she was diagnosed with cancer again and had to undergo further treatment, which thankfully was successful.  Sadly, two years ago she was told that the cancer had returned but this time it had spread to two of her organs and her bones and she cannot be cured. However, with the positive attitude that she has always shown she told her treating consultant, "I don't want to know what you can't do I only want to know what you can do".  She has been receiving Chemotherapy treatment ever since and despite the tiredness, she still gets on with life and remains positive. She is a real fighter and a true inspiration.

It is my mum's positive attitude that has inspired me to take on this challenge.  Although I like to go for a run now and again to keep fit I am by no stretch of the imagination "a keen runner"! However, I am determined to complete this challenge and my training is well underway.  When the going gets tough, I simply think of my mum and the fight she faces everyday, and suddenly my tiredness and aching legs feel like nothing in comparison.

I am truly grateful to Breakthrough Breast Cancer and in particular, Professor Tutt for the amazing work that they do in keeping my mum and others like her alive and living.
