Alzheimer's Society- Desert trek Sinai to Red Sea · 21 November 2009 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

We've all heard of Alzheimer's disease and may have some idea of the impact of the condition on the sufferer and their families. Those of us who haven't known someone with the disease will have heard of Ronald Reagan's battle as well as Harold Wilson and more recently Terry Pratchett. However, what about the unsung heros and heroines who have spent their lives working and bringing up families to be rewarded with possibly an armchair in a nursing home lost and bemused. Or at home surrounded by family who have become strangers to them.
The families of these unfortunate people have lost the person they knew, but are left with a shell of who they were and who doesn't even remember them. The emotional cost to sufferers and their families is incalculable.
The Alzheimers Society is working toward supporting people and their familes as well as funding research into prevention and treatment. I want to help this cause, Amanda and my family have been affected by this condition, so I welcome the opportunity to walk between 12 and 20 kilometres each day for 5 days over desert and mountainous terrain.
All I ask is that you may find the time to sponsor this effort, all donations are very gratefully received, no amount is too small (but large donations won't be rejected!).
