Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Yoga Mission is a unique and pioneering charity which is initiating enlightened social and economic change through education. It runs the International Chandramauli Charitable Trust, a school offering a high quality education to the children that society forgot, a school that takes the very poorest children in the very poorest and most populated state of India, and gives them the tools they need to turn their lives, and the lives of their families, around.

UNESCO has stated that 90% of underprivileged children are illiterate even after 4 years of school education.

We have many children that can be found working along the ghats and in the streets in Varanasi.

The Challenge:

The children themselves will play a charitable cricket match which they are very excited about given that they are cricket mad. Their teachers will be cheering them on and thanking them because these funds do not just provide teachers for the kids but also enables the teachers to pay for their very modest further education fees. Each teacher earns between £32 and £55 a month depending on hour many hours they give. Your donation makes a double impact!

The Charity
Lucy gave up a lucrative career in London 21 years ago, and travelled to India in search of a more fulfilling existence. She was struck by the number of children who had slipped through the state education system and ended up on the scrap heap, sentenced to a life of poverty from such a young age. Lucy and Devatma who also left his career decided to do something about it. They rented a room and started teaching these children with the aim of returning them to mainstream school. In  the space of a few years, this one room has grown into the International Chandramauli Charitable Trust, a school in Varanasi spread over five floors, which has 150 pupils on its books, including 37 residents.

What makes Chandramauli special is its philosophy. The holistic model of education not only provides children with the educational tools they need to further themselves professionally, but gives them an identity and a purpose by rooting them in their history and instilling in them the basic decent values of their own Vedic culture. They leave with a profound sense of both where they have come from, and where they want to go – most staying in their own community to help effect the change. Chandramauli takes in the very poorest children, the outcasts that society forgot. They educate them, house them, clothe them and show them how to lead a life with dignity and respect, and how to play a valuable role in a changing society.

Core subjects such as English, Maths, Hindi, Sanskrit and Computer Studies run 6 days a week with art & craft on Saturdays and Sundays. Classical dance classes have also been introduced on the weekends.

Unbelievably we realized recently that we are actually providing 801 classes per week!  That is a massive 41,652 classes a year! Even better that means the average cost to put on a single class is just £1.45. That is a manageable amount , right. We need your help to raise it. Amazing enthusiastic children who come from difficult circumstances such as special needs, orphaned, malnourished, underprivileged backgrounds, and first generation literate families.

This year we are are raising £4800 for the evening school and women’s sewing centre.

You can make a huge difference! £38 can provide a class 6 days a week for a month! £100 can provide 2.5 month of a daily class! £460 a class 6 days a week for a year! No donation is too small! You can even choose what kind of class you would like to sponsor, like maths, dance, environmental studies, art, English, Hindi, General knowledge, reading to name but a few!

The children themselves will be playing a cricket match to raise the funds and look for your sponsorship to help pay for their classes. Thankyou so much for your incredible support!
