The ActionAid Guernsey Group will be taking on the incredible challenge of climbing Kilimanjaro in June 2020 to address violence against women and children in Northern Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Story

ActionAid Guernsey has pledged to fundraise £70,000 for a project that will address violence against women and children in Northern Zanzibar, Tanzania. Approximately half of the funds for the project will be raised by our incredible Kilimanjaro trek team who are challenging themselves to climb to the roof of Africa, standing at 5,895m.

Violence against women and children is reaching epidemic levels in Zanzibar, with 2/5 experiencing violence in their lifetime. It can encompass a wide range of human rights violations, including sexual
abuse, child marriage, trafficking, infanticide, female circumcision. ActionAid Tanzania has significant experience in this area, having established a shelter for survivors of violence in Northern Zanzibar. The shelter has hosted 27 women and 51 children as an immediate and short term measure. It’s now being funded by the government. Through the shelter, ActionAid Tanzania identified the need to address root causes of violence, particularly around societal norms and stakeholder engagement, which is where our fundraising will be spent.

The project seeks to address violence against women and children in Zanzibar, by enabling 360 women and 680 children to prevent and respond to violence, and engaging with 50 stakeholders to reduce the acceptance of violence. The first outcome will be achieved through workshops and training sessions, start-up grants for women to provide economic independence, classroom sessions with school children about gender equality. The second outcome will be achieved through working with police, the government, religious leaders, community groups, men, and public debates, to debate and draw up action plans for addressing violence against women and children.

ActionAid’s work is designed to bring about sustainable change by developing long-lasting solutions to poverty, in partnership with local organisations and people living in poverty. With a long-term presence of 20 years working in Tanzania, we have built strong relationships with local people, local organisations and local government across Zanzibar where this project is being implemented. We work with poor and marginalised communities to design our programmes together. We empower local people by training them in the skills and tools they need so that they can continue our programmes themselves and continue to see the benefits for years to come. As well as addressing the basic needs of communities, we tackle the root causes of poverty, and ensure that our work will bring about changes which are sustainable in the long-term.

We would be really grateful of anything you can donate to this amazing project. Thank you so much for your support!
