Coco Channels Alcatraz and Catalina Channel Swim · 24 July 2019

We tackle Ocean threats by turning Ocean Science into understandable, practical tools; engaging people through film and popular culture; and running engagement programmes for youth. As the first generation to deeply understand Ocean issues, we’re also the last generation who can stop them.

Story

Coco Channel are a team of six passionate Irish women - Dara Hamill, Jane Reilly, Helen Charlton, Ruth McLaughlin, Audrey Burkley and Hannah Eastwood.

This year they are taking on the gruelling Catalina Channel Swim - a night swim from Catalina Island into Palos Verde, LA. That's after a warm-up swim in San Francisco Bay around the infamous Alcatraz Island!

Supported with two kayakers and an experienced boat crew, they ladies will swim as a relay, with only a swim suit, hat, goggles, and a dazzling collection of glo-sticks, they will take on this 20-mile swim challenge.

We are raising money for Plastic Oceans...Plastic Oceans UK have been experts on plastic pollution for nearly a decade. This began with our award-winning documentary A Plastic Ocean, now available for streaming on Netflix. Each year an extra eight million tonnes of plastic enters the ocean. By supporting us, you're facilitating our education, science and sustainability programmes that will create a wave of change. Through changing attitudes, behaviours and practices on the use and value of plastics, we can stop plastic pollution reaching the ocean within a generation.
