Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In April 2012 my close friend’s daughter Evie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) -- one of the most virulent forms of cancer that affects only about 30 to 40 children a year in the UK.
In January this year after 9 months and 22days of bravely fighting Evie sadly passed away at only 4 years old.
This year I am running the 3 x 10K’s (Bupa Great Woman’s 10’K, Great Scottish 10K, Paisley 10K) and of course The Race for life with Evie’s mum for University of Nottingham - Children's Brain Tumour Research because more research is needed.
DIPG’s are located in the brainstem, at the base of the brain and are difficult to treat because the tumour cells grow in between and around normal cells. It is impossible to remove a tumour because it interferes with the functioning of this critical area of the brain, it slowly robs children of their motor functions resulting in partial paralysis , loss of ability to speak, eat and see. Finally ending with an inability to breathe. Anyone who has been through this will know how heart wrenching this is especially as the child is fully aware of their decline
Some facts on Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG)
· Approximately 30 to 40 children diagnosed each year (UK)
· Has a survival rate of 0%
· Typical survival time is 9 to 12 months
· 5 to 10 of every 100 brain tumours is a DIPG
· Usually diagnosed in children from ages 5 to 10
