Story
Five-year-old Eliza was born seemingly healthy, but she has a condition called Rett Syndrome, which was not apparent until she regressed at around 12-18 months of age. After two years' of tests, she was eventually diagnosed at the age of 3.
Although Eliza used to be able to say a few words, sit up, crawl and use her hands to hold a spoon, she has now lost all these skills and has only recently taken her first steps at the age of 5, after intensive physiotherapy. She is, however, likely to be in a wheelchair for most of her life.
She cannot talk at all anymore, she can't use her hands or control her movements properly, she has breathing problems and needs 1:1 support for every aspect of her life. Many girls with Rett Syndrome suffer from seizures, heart problems and have to be tube-fed.
All funds raised for Reverse Rett will go towards vital research into treatments for Rett Syndrome. Much of this research is being undertaken at the universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow and there is real hope of treatments and even a cure in Eliza's lifetime.
