COLLAB-19

COLLAB-19 · 29 May 2020
At the beginning of lock down, I had an idea to ask as many
of my friends as possible to send me voice recordings of themselves singing
into their phones, then to send to me and to see if I could make a piece of
music from them.
Initially it was just an idea to occupy my time and my mind
during the following months of lock down, also to involve lots of my friends in
a potentially fun project /experiment. I
took to Facebook with a video appealing to my friends (musicians and non-musicians)
to get involved and send me something to work with. My only restriction was for
it to be in C (if possible)
I was blown away by the response over the following days. My
inbox was soon full with so many random weird and wonderful voice clips from
friends ranging from professional singers and musicians to those who have nothing
to do with music professionally just love for it. It was truly heart-warming to
have such a wide range of my friends involved in a project with me.
All of a sudden it was rapidly becoming real and I now had
to try and formulate some kind of piece of music to justify all of these
fantastic donations of musical clips.
There are 19 collaborators, which seems spookily relevant to
the time. These are Adam Redmore, Bella Collins, Ben Thorpe, Chris Burley, Francesca
Dimech, Hayley Toms, James Dafis-Clode, Jane Williams, Jenny Jones, John
Godwin, Joe Taylor, Kim Campbell, Nicki Rose, Pete Mathison, Rob Hughes, Sarah
Meek, Shane Dixon, Siobhan McCrudden, Trystan Hughes.
I would like to use the track to raise some awareness and
money for charity as it seems time appropriate. Given the nature of the project
and its community spirit, it just feels like the right thing to do.
I have chosen to support the
mental health charity ‘Mind’. Mental health is something that affects or has
affected most people either directly or indirectly, and having had my own
struggles with stress, and anxiety it is a cause very close to my heart. Many people
all over the world are experiencing loneliness, anxiety, stress and other
mental health problems at the moment due these uncertain and scary times.
I truly hope this track will bring as much joy to the
listeners as it did to me producing it, and that it spreads a message of hope, positivity
whilst raising money for a great and important cause.
