Story

Bradiford-based cancer patient and retired Colonel Tony Hare (86) is challenging himself to walk 26 miles in support of cancer charity Macmillan Cancer Support by his 87th birthday.

Tony lives in Bradiford near Barnstaple had the idea after hearing that
the London Marathon had been cancelled. As a cancer patient himself he decided to walk 26 miles and raise some much-needed funds for people living with cancer. Beginning on 18th April he hopes to reach his goal by his birthday on 7th May doing laps of a public footpath next to his home, as part of his permitted daily lockdown exercise.

Tony  was diagnosed with prostate and bladder cancer in 2013, said “I’m staying safe at home due to the pandemic, but as I’m allowed to go out for walks I decided to do something to help people who, like myself, have been affected by cancer. I aim to walk 1.5 miles a day wearing my Macmillan sash with my Labrador Meg, who is older than me at 13, which makes her about 91! I’ve been inspired by Captain Tom, what he did was the most amazing achievement. I take my hat off to him, I
have the highest regard for him as a fellow veteran.”

Tony hopes to raise £2600 from his marathon walking challenge.

“What Macmillan Cancer Support do with its nurses and supporting people emotionally  and financially is marvellous. I’ve had bladder and prostate cancer and was  very well looked after by the Macmillan nurses during my treatment at the Seamoor Unit in North Devon District Hospital.”

Thank you for all your support which is motivating Tony with every step that he takes.
