Story

The landscape of Herefordshire, and the UK at large, was changed forever by the Great War effort.  Ancient woodlands were stripped, a generation of young men were lost, rural traditions and communities were changed forever.  The intention of this project is to create a space at Queenswood for visitors of all ages to reflect upon the impact the First World War had on the people and landscapes of Herefordshire ,the importance of wood within the War effort, the impact on gender roles within rural communities, and the hard reality of trench warfare.

Queenswood itself was forever changed by the Great War as the woodland trees were clear felled to supply timber for the war effort leaving an open landscape. The wood has regenerated and thrives once more but the woodland structure will always reflect this period in its history.

To commemorate the part played by Queenswood and by the whole county and its communities, we wish to create a reflective space in the
centre of a triangle of oaks which are all 100 years old having grown up since the clear fell of the woodland. We will commission an artist to design an installation for this space to create a reflective experience for visitors and to stand as a memorial to World War One.
