Welcoming a refugee family to safety in Blackpool

Community Sponsorship Blackpool is raising money for CITIZENS UK

Welcoming a Syrian refugee family to safety in Blackpool · 9 November 2020

We are the biggest community alliance in Britain, bringing together hundreds of faith, education, labour and residents' groups in communities across the UK. Citizens UK encompasses the Living Wage Foundation, Sponsor Refugees and PACT.

Story

We are a grassroots community group who have come together to help a refugee family to safety in our hometown.

We made decision to do this because we were heartbroken at what we were seeing on the news. We felt completely at a loss knowing that so many families were forced to flee their homes due to war. We'd seen the footage of families who had managed to flee, who were now in unimaginable conditions within refugee camps. This was happening to real people, just like us, and we wanted to get up & do something about it.

We are able to do this through a government scheme called community sponsorship. This means, that an additional family will be able to find safety, on the provision that we as a community do the settling work. We need to do practical things like find a new home, schools, and employment for the family. As part of this, the government stipulates we must raise a minimum of £9000. If we don't raise this amount, unfortunately, we will not be able to welcome a family to safety.

What will my donation be used for?

The beauty of this scheme is that we are able to be flexible as to how we want to conduct this process - meaning we can take into account the best interests of the family, and our local community.

Some other groups have used this money for some of the below to give you an idea :-

- deposit for a house

- to purchase furniture

- to pay for driving lessons to enable families to get to jobs

- set of hair dressing tools to set up a business

and so on...

Any, and every amount donated really does mean the world to us and brings us one step closer to helping a family in crisis.
