We support young adults living with cancer to rebuild their lives after a diagnosis

Story

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I'm running the London Marathon 2021 for Shine Cancer Support UK and we need your help!

Shine is a UK charity that assists adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s living with cancer, and their Plus Ones. I’ve been a Network Leader in London since January 2019 and Shine members have been such a big help to me in my life after treatment.

As most of you know, in May 2016, while working in London, I received a shocking diagnosis of Ewing's sarcoma. I'd been playing football without knowing that I had a massive tumour in my chest. An NHS specialist team quickly arranged treatment, which involved chemotherapy, radiation to my right lung and a major operation, in which a surgeon removed parts of four ribs. To this day I have a prosthesis in my chest. It was a major event for my body to undergo and required a year of recovery.

I recall sitting in my radiologist’s office in late 2016, right before I was due to start radiation treatment. They were going to target the right side of my chest, hitting primarily my tumour but also my right lung as an unintended consequence. I asked her if I’d ever be able to run a marathon in my lifetime after the treatment I was about to undergo. I remember her turning slowly to me and saying, "It’s going to be very difficult for you.”

So here I am, years later, choosing to do something very difficult. I have committed to raising £3,000 for Shine Cancer Support and all donations go directly to them. If you’ve followed my story at all in the last number of years and been inspired in any way by it, then please donate whatever you can to my cause.

Shine's vision is that every adult in the UK living with cancer in their 20s, 30s or 40s can access help and support in a way that suits their lifestyle. Cancer patients and former cancer patients are part of a confident, supportive and empowered community that has grown from strength to strength since it was founded in 2008.

Please give whatever you can. And see you at the Finish Line on October 3, 2021! Thank you!

With love, Conor

Shine supports adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s who have experienced a cancer diagnosis. Too old for children and teenage services but too young for traditional cancer support, we support the people who fall into a devastating cancer support gap.
