Much like donated blood, donor human milk can help save lives. A condition called necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) kills more babies than childhood leukaemia. Human milk can prevent NEC, so if mum cannot produce milk, donor milk acts like a medicine to protect the baby, helping to save tiny lives.

Story

I first ran the Royal Parks in 2009 and I’m running it again this year - ten years older, ten years slower 😬

This time I’m part of an amazing team of 6 women (Team ❤️) and we’re fundraising for the Human Milk Foundation, an underfunded charity working to help more families feed their babies with human milk. Through Hearts Milk Bank, the HMF provides screened donor milk to sick, premature babies in NICUs, and to mothers with cancer and other conditions.

The Human Milk Foundation is raising three pillars:

Supply   Support   Science

The Human Milk Foundation is a new charity, established to fund research and education into human milk science, and to help parents access donor milk for their babies. Donor milk has until now been rationed to the sickest babies, but could help more to thrive. We will enable parents to access safe donor milk, if mum needs time and support to establish her supply or is unable to breastfeed for medical or practical reasons, or if baby is unwell. We have already helped mums with cancer, HIV and depression.

Our charity and the Hearts Milk Bank are getting more demand for donor milk from hospitals and families, and we urgently need funds so that we can help all of the babies that need it. Here are some of the ways that donations will help:

£10:        To pack and send a box of containers to a milk donor
£20:        To feed a premature baby with lifesaving donor milk for 24 hours
£75:        To screen a milk donor, including blood tests and a donor pack
£100:     To support a mother to establish her own breastfeeding through donor milk and lactation support
£250:     To pay for enough containers for all milk donors for 3 months
£500:     To feed a baby whose mother has cancer with donor milk for a month
£1500:   To purchase a new urgently needed medical grade freezer
