Story
Every year a group of volunteers visit Nakuru in Kenya in conjunction with Derby County Community Trust. We work with three schools in the most deprived area of this region helping to build classrooms, teach and just simply help these children have a few things that we take for granted on a daily basis. One of the schools that we help in is a school called Jubilee Academy and is located in the heart of the slums of Rhonda. After arriving on Monday, it was discovered a young boy called Cliff. His foot was strapped up and he was walking around on hand made crutches but with the biggest smile anyone has ever seen. After talking to the principal about what had happened to Cliff, it became apparent very quickly that he was very poorly. He had been hit by a car a while ago and had been taken to hospital. Unfortunatly because of his parents financial situation they were unable to stay for all the necessary treatment that he desperately needed and took him home to treat themselves. He had broke his foot very badly to the point where his bone is exposed. On learning this, it was arranged for Clifford to be taken to the hospital to see a doctor. He had his foot x-rayed and after a consultation with a doctor, we learnt the true extent of his injuries. His has to have to have his foot amputated and maybe even his leg. His mum has been treating the wound herself in the best possible way she can but the injury needed medial treatment which they are simply unable to afford. If Clift does not receive this treatment he will die from the infection within 6 months. As a group the target started at £3000 to simply save his life. It was then increased to £7000 to give the surgeon options and which will also pay for his after care and physio. Cliff is in horrendous pain and yet he has the biggest smile on his face that would light up a room and has touched everyone's hearts.
