Cordoba to London Bike Ride · 19 April 2010

RSBC believe every blind child and their family should have the skills and confidence they need to live their life without limits. We work with blind children and young people and their families to develop the skills they need to overcome the barriers to realising their hopes, dreams and ambitions.

Story

Tom, Alex, James and Daniel are all members of the City of London Cordwainers Company. You can follow the Team's final preparation and progress via Twitter - www.twitter.com/Cordwainers

Traditionally, Cordwainers were shoe makers based in London who used as their primary resource the soft goatskin, known as 'cordwain', imported from the Spanish town of Cordoba from the 13th Century onwards. Today the Cordwainers Company (www.cordwainers.org) is a charitable organisation made up of an eclectic bunch of people that oversee disbursements of funds and raise money for various charities.

The aforementioned characters Tom, James, Alex and Daniel having completed sponsored parachute jumps and marathons to raise funds turned to their forebears for inspiration for their next round of fund raising activities. And from there was born the idea of collecting leather from the Mayor of Cordoba and carrying it via bicycle to London.

The Cordwainers have been associated with Dorton House and its umbrella the Royal London School for the Blind for over half a century.
The Royal London Society for the Blind (RLSB) exists to provide the highest quality education, training, support and employment services for blind and partially sighted people.

Our aim is to undertake a gruelling 1,400 mile cycle ride from Cordoba to London to raise £25,000 (or more) to help fund Dorton House. This will go towards re-kitting a bedroom and bathroom suite for a pupil The room will permit an individual to use a remote controlled hoist system to move them in private and unassisted into a shower or bathroom and gives them the dignity of an independence which they are not usually able to achieve without these facilities. That extra independence makes all the difference to their quality of life.
