Great Kenya Make Over · 27 July 2009

Founded in October 2006, but with roots dating to the last century, Cornerstone is a lively, Holy Spirit-filled church in Black Notley, Essex. Youthwork, services, cell groups and outreach activities fill a typical week and we welcome visitors to see Cornerstone in action whenever they wish

Story

On 27 July 2009 a team from Cornerstone will be travelling to the Karundas Children’s Centre in Kenya to complete a project with the charity Kids Alive.

In January 2000 Kids Alive International UK bought the 50 acre Karundas site and, with the help of task force teams from the UK, built three children’s homes dedicated to meeting the various needs of girls and young boys in crisis.  Cornerstone helped to fund this venture back in 2000.

The Rebecca House was established as a home for children. Many parents in the community die of HIV/AIDS-related illnesses leaving their young, often HIV children, to ageing grandparents. They are often not able to provide them with the much needed basics such as nutritious food, education and medical care. The Rebecca House provides care for these children and has a successful anti-retroviral therapy programme.

The seventeen team members will be paying approximately £1,350 each for the trip which will cover their flights, transport to Karundas from Nairobi, board and lodgings.

The Team’s project will be to completely refurbish and redecorate Rebecca House - the younger children’s home at Karundas - and to provide new beds, bedding, nightwear and soft furnishings.  The beds (£140), mattresses (£20), wood and decorating supplies can be purchased locally.

There are currently 20 children and 2 care givers at Rebecca House sleeping in bunk beds in two rooms.  Kenyan regulations now mean that the children cannot have the short un safe wooden bunk beds and these must be replaced with metal ones which cost approximately £140 each.

The Team is proposing to take to Kenya duvets and covers, sheets, mattress covers, pillows and covers, a new set of nightwear for each child, lined curtains etc and tools to carry out the works required.

The tools and equipment that needs to be taken to Kenya include:  curtain rails, paint trays and rollers, paintbrushes, filler, sandpaper, cleaning and preparation equipment and supplies.

It is envisaged that there will be opportunities to be involved with the children who will be on school holiday for the second part of the period the team is at Karundas.   We estimate the cost per child to be £400.00

The team will be looking for further sponsorship to cover the costs of the project and return coach transport to Heathrow which is likely to add a further £600 to the cost.
