Story

During 2021, Shoe Tree Arts & Heaton History Group are commemorating the events of 1740 in which hungry Heaton miners and their families protested about the shortage and price of basic food. We are also thinking about  food issues today.

Our project is funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund, Newcastle City Council and Joicey Trust so all ‘Food for Thought: Newcastle’s Corn Riots’ events and activities are free.

We are, however, encouraging people to make a small donation to Trussell Trust, who campaign against food poverty and fund food banks, including in Heaton.

We support a nationwide network of food banks and together we provide emergency food and support to people in crisis, and campaign for change to end the need for food banks. (PLEASE NOTE: We're unable to forward funds onto individual foodbanks. All funds raised here go direct to the Trussell Trust.)
