Story

Epic trek around Cornwall coast

We are a family of four (two adults and two children aged 14 and 12) who are raising money for Myeloma UK by walking 296 miles over six weeks around the coast of Cornwall. This is our own adventure and not part of any larger, organised trek. Hopefully friends will join us for some stages of the trek.

The fundraising is in honour of our Uncle Paul whose story is outlined below, and also Amber's mother, Sandy Styles who passed away from cancer several years ago.

What the trek entails
- Our trek will start on August 16th at Cremyll near Plymouth on the South Coast of Cornwall and end at Marshland Mouth, near Bude on the North Coast. (https://www.cornwalls.co.uk/maps)
- The rugged, up-and-down coast walk is 296 miles but we estimate our journey to be 350 miles including supply-run detours.
- We will be camping along the way and aiming to average around seven miles a day.
- All our food and water supplies will be sourced on route by foot - we have no support crew!
- We'll be carrying everything we need to camp for six weeks.
- This is a massive adventure for our kids and the fundraising will help inspire them to keep going when it gets tough.
- We will be walking through whatever the Cornwall weather throws at us. (rain expected!)
- We will be using GPS tracking software so you can track our daily progress.

Disclaimer: We are funding the trek ourselves and all donations will go straight to the charity.

Paul's story

Paul, an otherwise healthy man in his sixties, started having discomfort in his leg in 2015 that graduated to lower back pain which was incorrectly attributed to sciatica. The pain increased and by June 2016 he was sent for a scan at York Hospital which revealed a large tumour at the base of his spine.

He was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma which is treatable but not curable. Paul has undergone effective radiotherapy, chemotherapy and is now awaiting the outcome from 'High dose chemotherapy with stem cell rescue', otherwise known as stem cell therapy.

Paul is in typically good spirits and is honoured to have his name associated with fundraising in aid of myeloma research, treatment and counselling.
