Derek Smalley has been in a wheelchair since 1985 when he injured his spine in a motorbike accident. He has been a Scout Leader since 1987. He currently works as an administrator for Central Southern Security in Lymington. He has taken part in two previous Back –Up events Skiddaw in 2003 and Helvelyn in 2004. He has also took part in a relay as part of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella in 1995.
