Friends of Southampton PICU Sahara Trek 2021 · 16 October 2021

We fundraise to buy equipment, fund major projects, desensitise the medical environment and buying a new ambulance for the Children's Intensive Care Unit at Southampton University Hospital. Caring for critically ill children from across the south of England and the Channel Islands.

Story

I am taking part in a 100km trek across the sandy, hilly dunes in The Sahara, Morocco to raise money for the charity at work. I'm a children's nurse at Southampton Children's hospital, working on the Children's Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Friends of PICU aims to support children and their families on PICU by providing vital equipment and services that are not always provided by the statutory authorities. They are celebrating their 15th anniversary in October 2020, and this trek will coincide with this celebration. I love my job, caring for critically ill children, being able to help support their journey through PICU and seeing them get better and go home. The charity does an amazing job in supporting these children and their families during difficult times and I see the benefits first hand from this. This is why I've decided to join the trek to help raise much needed funds.
