Story

About the Wildlife Ranger Challenge

COVID-19 has brought tourism revenue to a halt across Africa, threatening the important work and livelihoods of the rangers who protect iconic African wildlife such as elephants, pangolins, rhinos, lions, and more. Ranger teams are now uniting around the Wildlife Ranger Challenge, a running race with one goal: to raise money to support thousands of their fellow rangers. Now is the time to go the extra mile—it’s time to race to support our rangers. Every dollar donated will be matched by the Scheinberg Relief Fund, doubling your generous contribution.

Your contribution will help support 22 rangers and an estimated 200 livelihoods in and around Coutada 11 in Mozambique.

The role of rangers:

Rangers have been at the forefront of the comeback of our wildlife numbers. Our anti-poaching unit consists of a manager, 22 rangers and two helicopter pilots. Half of the unit patrol by motorcycle and the other half patrol on foot. This combination, along with a Robinson R22 helicopter, allows us to cover every part of Coutada 11 and keep poaching to an absolute limit. Lions were reintroduced to our area in 2018, which has increased the demands of our anti-poaching unit. The fact our lion population has more than doubled since then, however, bears witness to the great job this dedicated team is doing.

How your donation will help:

Funding would assist us to keep our unit at the full strength of 22 rangers in the field. It would also be used to keep our fast reaction motorcycle unit operational where we incur costs of maintenance and fuel.Lastly it would help us pay for flying hours for our eye in the sky, our Robinson R22 helicopter.

Effects of the pandemic:

During the safari season, daily excursions on our safari vehicles have a presence which indirectly assists with anti poaching. This year so far we have zero safaris. Our safari operation also contributes greatly to our operation. With zero clients so far this year we will have to reduce our budget tremendously.
