Himalayan Expedition - Mera Peak · 15 April 2011
Having climbed Kilimanjaro in February '10 for Daisy Chain, I have now set a much bigger challenge, with the support of Barclaycard and Sporting Lodge Gym, to climb Mera Peak, which at 21,500 ft is Nepals highest treking peak, some 2,000ft higher than Kilimanjaro whilst raising £20,000 for a very worthwhile cause.
Mera Peak is located in the mountain range with 5 of the 6 highest mountains in the world, including Everest. Climbing the mountain will involve crossing glaciers, navigating deadly crevasses, extreme altitude sickness and dealing with a lack of Oxygen at a height of just 4,000ft below the "Death Zone." where the level of Oxygen can not sustain human life.
About Daisy Chain.
Daisy Chain is a unique charity established to address the needs of both children with autism and their families. We do this through providing a range of services and activities from the 5.5-acre farm in Stockton-on-Tees where we are based. Around 2.3 million people are affected by autism, about 1 in 100 people. This includes family members and professionals involved in the care and support of people with autism.
People with autism have said that the world, to them, is a mass of people, places and events that they struggle to make sense of, and which can cause them considerable anxiety. In particular, understanding and relating to other people, and taking part in everyday family and social life may be harder for them.
Daisy Chains vision is to provide a range of support measures that take account of the needs of the whole family rather than just the child who has autism because autism has such a big impact on the whole family. We support parents, carers and siblings too through the provision of respite care and the opportunity to talk with other parents and siblings in the same position as themselves.
