Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Charity raise funds for appeals and to support Wards and Departments to provide a comfortable environment for our patients and their families. All funds raised support a specific appeal, ward, department or is used where it is needed most to support patient care.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page raising much needed funds for our very own NHS Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

Many of you guys already know him but for those that don't Andy Lomas was best known for being married to Lisa Great Britain's No.1 table tennis player although he was also one of the areas very best goalkeepers. I know that for a fact because he told me that himself on many occasions and when explaining his nickname "The Cat" to anyone that would listen!

Born in Hartlepool and raised in Dunstable, Bedfordshire he had a fantastic career playing for numerous clubs including Barnet, Stevenage Borough, Rushden and Diamonds and Chesham United and once commanded an undisclosed five figure transfer fee.

"The Cat" is widely recognised as being a Guinness world record holder after saving eight penalties on the bounce for Chesham; the first four against Hendon, Woking and Harrow Borough in 1991-2, followed by Harrow (again), Berkhamsted Town, Enfield, Marlow and VS Rugby in 1992-3....an amazing feat I'm sure all will agree.

Having briefly toyed this week with a full-time return to the professional game Andy decided to turn a Jorge Mendes contract down due to the simple fact of not having enough of his signature self-defacing props to carry in his kit bag.

However after recently clearing out his attic Andy (pleasantly surprised at what old-school outfits he discovered) has verbally agreed to post a series of video's of him attempting to

  • replicate any of his 8 Guinness world record breaking penalty saves (that he can remember)
  • complete some very testing keeper drills / warm up routines
  • generally have a giggle with / (mainly) at a few of the local players that Andy (and many of us) played with

Andy will be ably assisted and put through his routines by his gifted son Louis who as many of us know is with Norwich City.

These videos will aim to highlight his "still got it" agility at 55 and showcase some of the amazing throwback outfits that "the cat" would have adorned / carried into the changing room with any club that would have agreed (or not agreed actually) to "the wearing of outrageous wigs" contractual caveat point. These outfits would have not been exclusive to the pitch and would have accompanied him into a number of the countries premier nightspots including Tiffany's, The Pink Elephant & Charlie Browns.

In view of this making him look a complete  _ _ _ _  in public (didn't seem to concern him before) he has agreed to this with the strict instruction that it's purely to raise funds for the NHS.

Andy is taking this very seriously but warned that playing in goal for over 30 years on hard surfaces has taken it's toll on his body and will be needing some time to recover after each video. He even text me last night at 10.45pm telling me that he was going to bed early in full preparation after his nightly game of poker... if he can show that type of commitment we really need to be supporting him don't you think?

Could we therefore ask the wonderful local community to perhaps dip into their pockets for absolutely any sum of money (it really doesn't matter as times are tough for many at the moment) to show your delight at watching Andy's on-line (always out there for the record) self-defacing videos in an attempt to achieve our JustGiving goal which initially started at £500 (although due the amazing support received to date we’ve now revised this figure to £1000) for our superb L&D Hospital. We would of course be delighted if our expectations continue to exceeded...it is for a good cause after all ... we all have a good laugh (at Andy) and we raise some money for a hospital that I would be highly surprised hasn't touch each one of our lives or will at some point in the future!

Peace and and love to all and stay safe & healthy

Ash & Andy “The Cat” xx
