In Year 6, we have been thinking about how we can be ‘Champions for Change’. During discussions, the children showed a real interest in the issue of homelessness. They were shocked at the figures that showed how many people deal with different levels of homelessness, including rough sleeping, at some point in their lives. When finding out about the issue, we looked at the charity initiative ‘The Big Sleep Out’, where adults experience what it is like to sleep on the streets for one night in order to raise money.
Many children expressed an interest in this and came up with the idea of them doing a ‘Little Sleep In’. Those taking part would ask for sponsorship money, which would go to a charity that supports homelessness in our local area. This would allow them to raise money in a safe way, whilst still highlighting the issue. They wrote letters to Miss Dolan to ask if this event could be hosted and we have been so proud that they have taken such an interest in an important topic and that they want to do so much to help others.
