Defend Strong Encryption
Campaign by Internet Society (RCN 541650477)
Thank you to our team of incredible fundraisers who spent Global Encryption Day walking, running, knitting, baking, and much more! We raised money for Internet Society's work on encryption to ensure people can defend encryption for years to come.

Story

When it comes to encryption, governments around the world want to have their cake and eat it too. They want the security and privacy that end-to-end encryption provides, yet simultaneously want access to the data protected by end-to-end encryption.

In short, they want the impossible.

Unfortunately, governments continue to legislate for the impossible. Over the last several years, many governments have attempted to create laws or policies that would force companies to undermine encryption on their products. The EARN IT Act in the US, the Online Safety Bill in the United Kingdom, the Indian Intermediary Guidelines, and many others, which, while well intentioned, threaten break end-to-end encryption for all.

Breaking end-to-end encryption would leave everyone less safe, especially members of marginalized and at-risk communities.

In my day job at the Internet Society, I fight against the multitude of threats to end-to-end encryption. Together with our allies in the Global Encryption Coalition, we’ve successfully fended off many threats since 2020.

But to continue to succeed in our mission to
defend against government attempts to break encryption, we need your help.

As threats to encryption continue to emerge, encryption advocates face some of the most well-resourced adversaries in the world. That’s why this year during Global Encryption Day, I’m hosting a fundraiser for the Internet Society’s encryption work on JustGiving. Your donations will help the Internet Society strengthen its impact to defend strong encryption and protect security and privacy for everyone.

Join me on Tuesday October 25th at 12 EST (16.00 UTC) for a cryptographic cooking class where together we’ll follow an encrypted cake recipe, learn more about the importance of encryption, and discuss the threats the technology faces around the world.
