On Saturday 30th April 2022, a group of 18 work colleagues from Colne Valley Group will set off to attempt the National Three peaks Challenge. This is a challenge that requires the UK's three highest peaks - Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon to be climbed in succession, inc the travel between the peaks, within a 24hr period.
Please take the time to read below for our reason in choosing The Teenage Cancer Trust as our charity of choice for this event.
Sian Syron, the daughter of one of the directors here at Colne Valley Electrical, was diagnosed with JIA, (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis,) at the age of 8. By the time she was 13 the condition was diagnosed as systemic. JIA cannot be cured, only controlled with medication until she matures with age and the condition hopefully becomes controllable or benign. After some 9 years of treatment with various degrees of effectiveness, we had exhausted all the available medication and her medical team decided that a Bone Marrow transplant was the only remaining option for her.
She was admitted to UCLH on December the 6th 2021 for the transplant after a long search for a suitable donor, this is where we witnessed the work the Teenage Cancer Trust do for young people and their family’s faced with serious illness and long spells of hospital treatment.
Teenage Cancer Trust offers unique care and support, designed for and with young people. They fund specialised nurses, youth workers and hospital units in the NHS, so that young people have dedicated staff and facilities to support them throughout their often long spells of treatment. Sian`s treatment was carried out by the NHS on the adolescent ward at UCLH, where the Teenage Cancer Trust operate a hospital hub, and therefore we feel that our fundraising mission should be in support of this Trust to help allow them to carry out the excellent work for cancer patients and patients with other related conditions such as what Sian had.
