Story

Leckhampton Court Hospice gave us the chance to say a peaceful goodbye to Mum. We are raising money to help them continue to provide such amazing care.

Mum

Mum was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July 2017. She had two lots of chemo, in Autumn 2017 and then Spring 2018. These helped hold back the cancer a little and enabled her to continue something like normal life - working, playing tennis, looking to the future. Sadly she seriously declined in May 2018. She was unable to eat and was in a great deal of pain and suffering. We tried to care for mum at home during this time - she hated hospitals and made very clear that she did not want to die in a hospice.

Leckhampton Court Hospice

Eventually we realised that the family was at breaking point and we agreed with mum that we needed the help of some professional care. We took her to Leckhampton Court Hospice, near Cheltenham. In the 7 days she stayed at the hospice, mum was cared for 24/7 in a beautiful setting by wonderful, loving, skilled staff - from the palliative care consultant right through to the chefs. She returned home from the hospice with her pain under control, a palliative care plan, and without the great burden of anxiety that she was carrying before. This hospice care transformed the final weeks we then spent with mum. We had been gifted a peaceful time, relatively free of pain and suffering, in which to say goodbye from the comfort of the family home, as she had wanted. Mum died on Monday 9th July surrounded by her family and messages of love.

How your donations will help

I am raising money with a group of friends for Leckhampton Court Hospice so they can continue to provide life-changing support and care for patients and their families. It costs an incredible £10,000 per day to run the hospice; I hope we can raise as close to that as possible.

Bike ride

Every year the Dunwich Dynamo sees cyclists ride through the night for 120 miles from Central London to Dunwich, on the Suffolk coast. In 2017 we had just received mum's diagnosis and so our plan to ride the Dynamo was called off. This year, on Saturday 28/29th July, a big group of us will be cycling together in memory of mum and in aid of Leckhampton Court.

How you can support us

Leckhampton Court Hospice

Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham is Gloucestershire’s ONLY inpatient hospice for people across the county, for adults 18 years and upwards, who have a life limiting condition.

Leckhampton Court provides specialist, palliative care in the 16 bed hospice unit. As well as this there is a day hospice facility, hospice at home nursing service, a voluntary befriending service and bereavement support.

It costs Leckhampton £3.7 million a year to run these FREE services. That's £10,000 a day! Last year 635 patients were cared for across Gloucestershire, as well as many more family and friends.

The hospice relies significantly on the generosity of supporters and the community to achieve this. Your contribution will be a huge support to ensure this wonderful care provided continues.
