I signed up for the 103mile 'By eck tha wa ard'' route at the Yorkshire Lass Sportive on 20th August after taking part in the 60mile route in 2016.

I've still not cycled more than 60 miles, and I've got less than a month to start training!

Why do I want to support York Against Cancer?

I had a mole that turned out to be a melonoma. Luckily it was caught early enough by a GP referral to the York Hospital Dermatology department, and it was <1mm deep (superficial), and unlikely to have spread to lymph nodes/around the body.

YAC have invested in 37 x £700 dermatoscopes for GPs in the York area to take images in their surgeries, which are then analysed by skin specialists at York Hospital. This service will cost jut £4.72 per image, compared to £110-144 for a referral to the York Hospital Dermatology department.

My GP nearly didn't refer me, as he didn't think it looked abnormal, but did it 'just in case'. I'd like to think that innovative solutions like the dermatoscopes can detect abnormalies earlier and cost less for the NHS at a time when savings are needing to be made.

• Commissioning a £700,000 mobile chemotherapy unit to provide more treatments locally. They are aiming to raise £100,000 in 2017 to support the £1000 a day running costs.
