Story
In September I will be embarking on a 1300 km solo cycle ride around Iceland to raise money for Macmillan cancer support.
I was diagnosed with testicular cancer in October 2016 and received the best possible treatment available, thanks to the amazing NHS. I am extremely grateful to have come out of it cancer-free. This month marks the five years that have passed since the final phase of my treatment.
3 million people in the UK are currently living with cancer, a figure expected to rise to 4 million by 2030. Most people reading this will have at least friend or family member who has been diagnosed. Sadly, too many cancer patients suffer a much more painful, distressing and drawn-out experience than mine.
Macmillan cancer support is a truly heroic charity organisation that provides emotional, practical, social, physical, and financial support to cancer patients in the UK.
The support includes information for patients and families, a cancer support line, financial guidance, grants, welfare and employment rights advice, well-being coaching, exercise advice, a will writing service, and especially important these days, energy bills advice. Macmillan also conducts research and campaigns for better cancer care.
The organisation is made up of millions of supporters, professionals, volunteers, and campaigners. Their goal is to reach and improve the lives of everyone who has cancer in the UK. Unfortunately, these support services are struggling to cope and the number of people with cancer is increasing.
About the trip
Life can be surreal and unpredictable, and so can Iceland. In early September, I will be setting off on my own, on a cycle ride that will take me around the Iceland's 1300 km Route 1. This is a main road that forms a loop around the country. The 3-week adventure will take me through beautiful scenery and erratic weather. I'll spend most nights sleeping in a tent but will also check into the occasional hostel or bed and breakfast. I will be documenting this trip through photos and videos, so follow this page or Instagram below if you want to be kept in the loop.
