Lewa Half Marathon · 30 June 2018

The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy works as a catalyst for the conservation of wildlife and its habitat. It does this through the protection and management of species, the initiation and support of community conservation and development programmes, and the education of neighbouring areas in the value of wildlife.

Story

Hello friends,

On Saturday 30th June 2018 I am running the Lewa Safaricom Half Marathon along the Equator in Northern Kenya.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is renowned worldwide for innovative and highly successful community-led conservation.  Its pioneering work helped recover Kenya’s
black rhino population from the brink of extinction and protects 11% of the world’s critically endangered Grevy’s zebra as well as supporting lots of other wildlife.

In 1970 there were 20,000 black rhino in Kenya, due to poaching this figure plummeted by 98% to only 280 individuals in just 12 years. This figure is now on the rise thanks to Lewa and other conservancies.

In addition to protecting wildlife, the conservancy supports 21 primary and secondary schools and over 7,000 children through the Lewa Education Programme.

Last year the funds raised had numerous and varied beneficiaries, from the community rangers who patrol Mount Kenya on foot and horseback ensuring it remains safe and pristine for years to come; to the marine scouts at Watamu’s Local Ocean Trust who patiently and lovingly
watch over endangered turtle nests; to the forest scouts at
Ngare Ndare Forest who guard over indigenous
forest species dating back 200 years. Not to mention the keepers of
Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (which is very special to me!) who rescue and raise orphaned baby elephants from all across northern Kenya and is the first community owned elephant orphanage in the WHOLE world!!

I am honoured to be running as part of the Lewa Next
Generation team and after seeing what they do at Lewa and experiencing the work first hand it is so exciting to be able to help support them.

It is regarded as one of the toughest marathons in the world with an altitude of 5000ft and temperatures in the 30's so I have my work cut out for me – please support me, or the cause or hopefully both!

Thank you :):)

Love Daisy xx
