Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I have Type 1 Diabetes and hope to raise awareness of Diabetes in the community and encourage others who also have Diabetes to have hope and live their life to the full.

My diagnosis came at age 33 at the time that our third child was born. Having a brother and sister both with Type 1 Diabetes from earlier in life I had seen some of the challenges and difficulties that living with Diabetes brought to their lives. I am also a GP and had experience in trying to help people manage their diabetes. However I never appreciated the breadth of impact that it has on life until I had to cope with it myself. I've also realized the impact my condition has had on the life of my wife and kids, and how all those caring for people with diabetes can be affected.

I was a fairly fit but casual cyclist prior to being diagnosed and decided to start running more often as I could fit it into my busy life more regularly and easily. I found that the sense of freedom in movement, in experiencing the environment around me, and in coming to learn how to manage my glucose levels whilst exercising has been a massive help in both gaining control of my diabetes and in maintaining my own well-being. Running with diabetes is a challenge that though seemingly immense and confusing at times has taught me a lot about myself, about having the discipline and attention to detail that living with diabetes requires, and ultimately being rewarded many times over. Now I think I've crossed over to trying to fit my life around running!

This year at NEWRUN, the Newcastle festival of running, I'll be joining in the Fort5 event with the Diabetes NSW team and look forward to to the experience of being with a group supporting those with Diabetes.

I'll then be jogging down to Bar Beach to run in the 10k Hill to Harbour event which will involve a greater degree of exertion and hopefully end in a fast time.

I have set up this page largely to raise awareness and as I wish to encourage others both with diabetes and who support those of us with diabetes, and because I love running and the benefit it has been to me in living with diabetes. Feel welcome to donate to support Diabetes NSW if you wish. They do a great deal to help those of us who live day to day with diabetes to live life to the full.
