Story
For those who know me, you'll know I am a mad keen cyclist; racking up many miles on my fleet of bikes.
I am turning 40 in late June and felt the need to do one of my 'Bucket List' items before hitting this landmark!
I've completed many sportives in the UK and even one in the French Alps; but now feel ready to take on a bigger challenge.
I am still able to do these cycling events thanks to the efforts of the Great Western Air Ambulance. In early 2015, I was involved in a serious crash on a descent off The Mendips, South of Bristol. The Air Ambulance was scrambled and in short, their critical care is the reason why I survived.
Needless to say I took a bit of a pasting with; a bleed on the brain, broken pelvis, shoulder, wrist and thumb. My advice is to not have an argument with a dry stone wall at >30mph! I was in hospital for 3 weeks, having numerous operations and now carry 5 pins in my pelvis (https://greatwesternairambulance.com/the-skill-of-the-team-is-the-reason-i-am-here-today/).
I plan on completing the challenge in 11 days (without a day off & out of the saddle); with the following itinerary:
Day 1 - Lands End to Liskeard
Day 2 – Liskeard to Tiverton
Day 3 – Tiverton to Bristol
Day 4 – Bristol to Shrewsbury
Day 5 – Shrewsbury to Preston
Day 6 – Preston to Carlisle
Day 7 – Carlisle to Kilmarnock
Day 8 – Kilmarnock to Inverary
Day 9 – Inverary to Fort Augustus
Day 10 – Fort Augustus to Brora
Day 11 – Brora to Thurso
Day 12 – Thurso to John o’ Groats
This totals around 1,100miles and 17,500m of climbing!
Thanks in advance to you all; no matter what you are able to contribute, your donations will be heading to a great charity who provide a truly invaluable service.
