Story
In December 2017 my little brother Daniel (age 23) sadly took his own life. He was a much loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend to many.
Daniel was a keen sportsman who enjoyed cricket, golf, badminton, surfing and skiing. However, one of his favourite passions was cycling and he was in training for a triathlon. I am sure the thought of me doing a 100km trek is making Dan laugh right now but I am sure he would be proud!
The reason why Dan took his own life is something we will never know and for his family and friends it was a complete shock. He seemed happy and enjoying life and there were no signs that he was struggling with an illness. This is a very important point that I would like to make - just because someone seems happy and lives life to the full doesn’t mean that they may not me struggling with depression.
Shockingly, suicide is the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK. Depression and mental health is very rarely talked about but thankfully charities like ‘Mind’ are raising awareness. My boyfriend and I are doing this challenge in memory of Daniel and to raise money for this fantastic charity which helps support people with depression.
Daniel was much loved by so many and will be dearly missed. We really appreciate all donations. Our minimum target to raise in order to enter the challenge is £425 per person; however we hope to raise as much as possible for a charity close to our hearts.
The Challenge: Over the May Bank Holiday (26th, 27th May) we will be walking an epic 100km from Capital to Coast setting out from Richmond upon Thames and over the North & South Downs before finishing in Brighton.
