Event: Great North Run 2021, on 12 September 2021
We raise money for Testicular Cancer to improve awareness and save lives!

Story

I’m planning to run the Great North Run this September and raise money for Odd Balls Foundation to raise awareness of testicular cancer.

19th February 2020 I was devastated to find out I was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Basically, I found an abnormal lump a week before the diagnosis and got it checked out with my GP the next day. That then lead to an ultrasound scan a few days later which confirmed a ‘shadow’ and a 98% chance that the lump was cancerous. Numerous appointments later, and a week after my GP appointment, I underwent an orchidectomy to remove my right testicle, which was a successful operation.

I underwent a 3 week recovery from surgery where it was a struggle with mobility to start with but I gradually got there thanks to my loving wife Sophie, amazing family and friends and not to forget our little dog Norman who’s helped massively (even if he doesn’t know himself!).

Friday 13th March, I had a follow up appointment where I found out that the cancer had spread to a lymph node at the back of my abdomen as well as a very slight spread to a lung. It’s been classed as Stage 2 cancer and although still very treatable and curable, a very scary time for myself and my family.

The next step for me is 3 courses of chemotherapy, starting Monday 23rd March, which will be over the next 3/4 months where I’m expected to make a full recovery.

At 26 years old, this is the last thing you think will happen to you but I’m so lucky to have an amazing family and fantastic friends to help me through this and smash this! I honestly couldn’t have done any of it up to now without them and I know there’s people out there not as lucky as me.

Lads, check yourselves.

If you notice anything unusual get yourselves checked over ASAP. Leave your dignity in the waiting room and don’t be scared, ashamed or embarrassed!
