Story
In January I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST). Whilst obviously a shock, I do actually consider myself to be extremely lucky for a number of reasons. Firstly, we were able to discover the tumour (who's called Terry, btw) and have a plan to deal with it over the next couple of years or so, and secondly, I'm blessed to have a truly world class team of specialists looking after me.
As many of you know, I'm a keen runner and aspiring (but talentless) triathlete as well as a regular volunteer at parkrun. I know the benefits of being active for both the mind and body. I first felt that something wasn't quite right in August '21 and right through until my diagnosis my motivation to keep active had steadily tailed off.
Thats where MOVE comes in...
MOVE is embarking on a mission to inspire people to #MoveAgainstCancer. MOVE provide practical and online support to people living with and beyond cancer.
5K Your Way, Move Against Cancer is a community-based initiative, provided by the MOVE charity. Their aim is to encourage those living with and beyond cancer, their families and friends, and those working in cancer services to join their local 5k Your Way group at designated parkrun events on the last Saturday of every month.
The benefits of keeping fit and active during cancer treatment are well known and the community based approach that the 5K Your Way initiative takes to provide a support network for those dealing with cancer are second to none.
So on 12th June, 2022, I'll be running the "Hampshire Hoppit" marathon - named after a local beer (but thats not why I've entered)
The Hampshire Hoppit marathon is a trail race, i.e. predominantly off-road. The route includes local sections of famous long distance footpaths, the Wayfarers Walk and the Harrow Way. Its a scenic single-lap course that will start and end at Kingsclere on the Hampshire/Berkshire border, reaching some of the highest points in Hampshire with views across the county.
I will be supported on the day by my long time running buddy Paula Williams (famous for her 366 day 5k run-streak, numerous ultramarathons and marathons), who like me, enjoys pulling the odd silly face (or gurn as its now known), so we expect lots of laughs on the day.
From a health point of view, my Oncology team are more than happy for me to take part in the event, so no need to worry mum x
