Story

About 6 or 7 years ago my Dad was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia, a type of dementia that affects the front and sides of the brain, affecting your language and behaviour. Unlike other forms of dementia, Frontotemporal Dementia affects people at a much younger age, with an age range of 45-65.

The last few years have been difficult for the whole family, slowly seeing my Dad's condition worsen. Lockdown has been a huge change for us all, but none of us could prepare for the impact it had on my Dad. My Dad's condition progressed so much quicker than any of us could ever imagine and I still struggle to really wrap my head around it.

My little sister, Imi, has been an amazing help over the years while I''ve been away for university and work, and I'm so proud of how strong she's been throughout all this. My family, especially my Mum, have been amazing with fundraising for various charities over the years, as well as my Dad and Grandma being strong advocates for raising awareness and aid for dementia. I figured it's now my turn, and have been lucky enough to be chosen to run the London 2022 Marathon as part of the Alzheimer's Society team.

Over the last few years, we've been lucky to spend the time we've had together with Dad, throughout multiple hospitals, and finally Marmaduke's in Hull, where he sadly passed away, surrounded by family.

Anyone that knew my Dad knows what a joker he is, and I'm certain I have him to blame for my questionable humour (and good looks). He loved a pint and to watch the reds, and we've been very lucky to be able to enjoy our success over the last few years together.

Hopefully luck is more on my side this time round, I've managed to stay injury free so far (touch wood), and ready do justice to all the amazing donations raised so far.

Times are hard at the moment, so if you're unable to donate, please have a read of my story and have a Google about the condition. Every penny and every bit of awareness can really make the difference. Thank you for taking the time to read my story - bit of a long one apologies!

Hope I'm making you proud Dad x
