To walk in their shoes · 20 March 2015

Shoes for Planet Earth is a local charity that collects both new and used sports shoes to give to those in need, at no cost, both in Australia and around the world. They have shoe drop-off locations all over Australia and the shoes collected get re-distributed back into the local community from where they were collected. The shoes go to homeless shelters, youth crisis centers, women’s safe houses, disaster areas, and anyone with a need for shoes. Internationally the shoes are sent to 6 different African countries where they go to orphanages, churches, schools and other charities. The need in Africa is huge but postage is expensive, so any financial donations are appreciated. See our web page at www.shoesforplanetearth.com.

Story

Do you just love the feeling of taking off your shoes after a long day of lectures? What if I tell you that such a feeling would be considered a luxury in third world countries

Harry Keville, Andrew Preston, Nikhil Sachania, Bogdan Chiva Giurca, Samuel Wilkins, Imanoudiene Muhd, Qarin Irfan, Muhammad Ikhwan and I, Daniel Fatzunnahar pledge to perform our daily routine (going to lectures, exercise, etc. ) barefooted for a day with every 100 pounds donated. All proceeds will go to the Shoes for Planet Earth charity which aims to provide recycled running shoes to those in need around the world with the purpose to "encourage exercising and a healthy lifestyle, to improve hygiene and disease control and facilitate the 'feel good' intangible benefits of giving and receiving"

The number of barefoot orphaned children, in Sub-Saharan Africa alone, is estimated to be above 20 Million.

Many serious health conditions can be absorbed through the feet, even through the toughest soles. As the skin on the bottom of the feet toughens and thickens, large cracks can form, which allows parasitic infections such as hookworm and threadworm to penetrate the skin. In addition, constant cuts and scrapes to the feet and ankles frequently become infected and many of these infections can lead to ulcers and worse.

We face the same risk by walking barefooted to campus but it is nowhere near the risks faced by these children every day. Donations above the goal would be directed to the Soles4Souls charity which unfortunately is not included in the JustGiving directory of charities.

Please do donate. It's the thought and not the amount that matters. We will gladly accept volunteers to walk barefooted with us when we reach our goal :)
