Story

Someone becomes homeless in Scotland every 17 minutes.

For me, there are many things that I feel I take for granted in life; my family, my friends, and my home. I can't imagine how difficult it is for those who lose their home and end up on the streets, removing their stability and placing them into a harsh and dangerous existence. In many cases the reasons for their becoming homeless are traumatic enough, such as domestic abuse, harassment, or human trafficking. Losing their home often compounds this situation, making a hard life even harder.

StreetCare Scotland is a volunteer-led initiative run by Humanist Society Scotland to help people in need on the streets of Scotland’s cities. They provide warm food, clothes and blankets to those who present themselves as requiring support, on a non-judgemental basis. They also provide a listening ear for people who find themselves living in relative social isolation. The initiative makes a tangible difference on the streets of our cities, and receives no government funding.

To raise money for Streetcare Scotland to continue their vital support of the vulnerable in our communities, I have set myself the challenge of running a marathon before Christmas.

I first got into running just under a year ago, and at first I could not even run a mile. I hated it. However, I decided to stick with it, and was eventually persuaded to sign up for the Scottish Half Marathon, which was due to be held in September. Unfortunately this was cancelled due to Covid-19, and so I have decided to run a full marathon as I will have extra time to train for it. I have never ran anywhere near that distance before, so it will certainly be a challenge! I hope to be able to post some updates of myself wheezing round Edinburgh for everyone to see.

Donations of any size are welcome, I would be grateful for any contribution to this cause.

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my page,

Daniel
