In the fall of 2021 my wife, Suzanne, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Because of the progress of scientific research, such as that done at the Institute of Cancer Research, she is still with us. 

A new drug, a targeted therapy, which I like to call 'Star Trek medicine' because the way it works sounds like science fiction, gave Suzanne the gift of almost an entire year with few symptoms and the energy to live a full life.

Unfortunately that drug has stopped working, and the only other targeted therapy available didn't work for her. Early this year she transitioned into older treatments, and we can clearly see how enormous a gift we were given with the newer drugs.

While I am spending most of my time at Suzanne's side, it will give her joy to cheer me from afar for at least one more marathon, especially knowing that this time my race is helping give back to the people who have helped us over the past couple of years. 

While my training isn't likely to be at the level it might have been in the past, it will be an important part of taking care of my mental health to ensure that I can continue to support her as well as I can.
